Getting rid of mold takes more than scrubbing a stain. The three practices below cover what actually works for small problems — and where the line sits between a job you can handle and one that needs a professional.
1. Fix the Moisture First
Mold grows where things stay wet. Before cleaning anything, ask where the water is coming from: a dripping pipe, a roof leak, condensation, or humidity that never drops. If you clean the patch but leave the moisture, the growth usually returns within weeks.
For recurring growth, moisture source identification finds the leak or humidity problem behind it. This is the single most important practice on this list, and the one most often skipped.
2. Clean Small Areas Safely
For a small, surface-level patch — say, a few tiles in a shower — careful cleaning can work. Ventilate the room, wear gloves and a mask, avoid dry scrubbing that throws spores into the air, and use a cleaner suitable for the surface. Do not bleach large areas or mix cleaning products.
Do not try to clean large growth, growth inside walls, or growth spread across a ceiling yourself. Disturbing it without containment spreads spores, and soaked materials usually need removal rather than cleaning. In those cases, a mold inspection is the right next step.
3. Dry Thoroughly and Keep It Dry
After cleaning, the area must be dried completely — fans, ventilation, and, where useful, a dehumidifier. Damp drywall, wood, and grout invite regrowth, so "looks clean" is not the same as "is dry." Going forward, keep the area ventilated and humidity in check, and fix new leaks promptly.
